COVID 19 Cases Rising In India Highlights: India is once again witnessing an unsettling rise in COVID-19 cases, with the number of active infections climbing to 3758, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest update as of 8:00 AM IST, June 2, 2025.

Leading the current spike is Kerala, which reported 189 fresh infections, pushing its active caseload to 1336; nearly half of the country’s total. Meanwhile, West Bengal added 89 new cases, increasing its active tally to 205, while the national capital Delhi recorded 81 new infections, taking its active cases to 375.

Maharashtra, another state that has seen consistent rises in previous waves, reported 43 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections recorded this year to 467, as per the state’s public health department.

As per May 2025 classifications by the World Health Organization (WHO), subvariants LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 are categorised as Variants Under Monitoring, meaning they are not yet deemed as Variants of Concern or Variants of Interest. However, these strains are suspected of contributing to the rising infections in India and across China and other parts of Asia.

Despite the emergence of new subvariants, the JN.1 strain remains the most dominant, accounting for a staggering 53% of all positive cases across the country. According to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a case of NB.1.8.1 was detected in Tamil Nadu in April, while four cases of LF.7 were identified in Gujarat earlier this month.

With the virus subtly shifting form and symptoms evolving, health authorities are urging the public to maintain precautionary measures, including hygiene, mask use in crowded places, and timely testing. Although hospitalisation remains low, experts warn that complacency could reverse progress.

Stay informed, and if you’re experiencing mild symptoms like fatigue, a sore throat, or gastrointestinal discomfort, it’s best to test early and isolate to prevent further spread.

COVID-19 Cases Rising in India LIVE: What Are Symptoms Of The New COVID Variant?

A. Gastrointestinal Issues

A distinguishing symptom of JN.1 is the heightened occurrence of digestive problems, including nausea, decreased appetite, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. Although gastrointestinal symptoms were observed in previous COVID-19 variants, they were generally less frequent and often mild. In the case of JN.1, these symptoms appear to be more pronounced and impact a greater number of patients. Medical professionals suggest that this shift may be attributed to the virus's modified behavior within the body or its interaction with the immune system of the gut.

Covid 19 Cases In India LIVE: Karnataka govt issues guidelines for schools, general public

Amid rising COVID-19 concerns and a surge in active cases in the state, the Karnataka government on Saturday issued a circular and public advisory outlining guidelines for schools and the general public.

The circular states that the guidelines are intended to protect the health of school children and the general public.

The circular in connection with schools stated, “These guidelines were formulated based on the recommendations made during a COVID-19 review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 26, given schools reopening across the state in June.”

Key points include that children showing symptoms such as fever, cough, or cold should not be sent to school and must receive appropriate treatment as per medical advice. In a public advisory regarding COVID-19 surveillance and safety, the health department stated, “In light of the increase in COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, the state continues to monitor and manage the situation through ongoing efforts to prevent transmission, detect cases, and provide care. The Department of Health and Family Welfare urges all citizens not to panic but to remain vigilant and actively support public health measures. Continued cooperation is essential to detect and contain new variants or potential outbreaks. Your health is our priority.”

The public has been advised to stay alert but not anxious, avoid spreading unverified information, and report international travellers to authorities for necessary follow-up. People are encouraged to wear masks in crowded places, maintain physical distancing, and practice good hygiene.

Citizens are also urged to report symptoms early, support testing and surveillance, and report unusual spikes in COVID-19-like symptoms through the IHIP portal's community monitoring tool.

The public is advised to keep shared spaces clean. A toll-free helpline number has also been provided for health advice and emergency patient transport.

The advisory concluded by stating, “Together, we can quickly identify and control potential illnesses, keeping ourselves and our communities safe.”
