The Congress party criticized the central government on Friday for conducting the last rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Nigambodh Ghat, calling it a "deliberate insult" to India's first Sikh Prime Minister.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed disappointment over the decision, questioning why a more suitable location for cremation and a memorial was not considered.
"Earlier this morning, the Congress President had written to the Prime Minister, suggesting that the cremation of the former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, take place at a location where a memorial could be built to honour his legacy. The government will allocate space for a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Union Home Ministry said in a late-night release. The statement, titled “Facts of the matter regarding memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh,” confirmed receiving a request from Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Kharge and Singh’s family about the decision after a Cabinet meeting. The ministry added that cremation and other formalities can proceed as a Trust needs to be formed before the space is officially allocated.
The decision came after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider building a memorial for Manmohan Singh at the site of his last rites, the party said on Friday.
