Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the PM's Chamber in Parliament. The meeting is to select the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and the Vigilance Commissioner in CVC.

Further details on the meeting are awaited.

The Commissioner post has been vacant since September 13, and Heeralal Samariya was the last Chief Information Commissioner who retired after turning 65.

The Commission is authorised to have one Chief Information Commissioner and up to 10 Information Commissioners. Currently, it has only two: Anandi Ramalingam and Vinod Kumar Tiwari.

What Is Central Information Commission?

The Central Information Commission was constituted with effect from October 12, 2005, under the Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005. The jurisdiction of the Commission extends over all Central Public Authorities.

Panel To Select CIC

According to an NDTV report, the appointment of Information Commissioners for the eight vacant positions at the CIC will also be decided. The government had earlier informed the Supreme Court that officials for these posts would be selected by a panel led by the Prime Minister.

The report further states that the Prime Minister chairs the panel responsible for selecting the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners under Section 12(3) of the RTI Act.

Apart from the Prime Minister, the panel includes the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and a Union Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.
