Meet Ratan Tata's Close Friend, Who Lived In Same Hostel And Enjoyed Picnics – He Is Neither Shantanu Naidu Nor His Pet 'Goa'

Ratan Tata, the iconic Indian industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. His death has sent ripples of grief across the nation, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from various sectors. 

Ratan Tata shared a close relationship with Gufi Paintal, the veteran actor known for his memorable portrayal of Shakuni in the classic TV series ‘Mahabharat.’ Their friendship blossomed during their time at a hostel in Jamshedpur in the late 1960s. 

'Mahabharat' actor Gufi Paintal reminisced about their engineering days, recalling how Ratan Tata, who had just returned from training in the US, was a thorough gentleman. Ratan Tata resided in Room No. 21, where he often engaged in meaningful discussions with his fellow students. 

Gufi Paintal recounted a memorable encounter with Tata on Linking Road in Bandra. When Tata offered him a ride home, Paintal politely declined, saying, “No, Ratan, thank you so much. I’m just crossing the road; my car is on the other side.” This brief moment left a profound impact on him.

Reflecting on their friendship, Paintal shared how Tata would take his friends on picnics in his stunning silver convertible Plymouth. They would enjoy music from a high-fidelity radio while listening to both English and Hindi songs, creating unforgettable memories together.

Gufi Paintal passed away in 2023 at the age of 79 due to age-related health issues. He became a household name through his role as Shakuni Mama in ‘Mahabharat’ and appeared in various TV shows and films, including ‘Bahadur Shah Zafar’ and ‘Rafoo Chakkar.’

A millennial manager, Shantanu Naidu, and the late iconic Indian industrialist Ratan Tata shared a strong bond. Shantanu Naidu, who transitioned from an engineering intern to Tata's youngest general manager, was not just an employee but also a close confidant and trusted friend. 

During a visit to Goa, Ratan Tata encountered a stray dog that began following him. Moved by the dog’s companionship, he chose to adopt him and bring him to Mumbai, naming him 'Goa.' Now, Goa resides at the Bombay House alongside other stray dogs. Additionally, Tata's beloved pets, Tango and Tito, held a special place in his heart, and many believe their influence inspired him to establish a hospital for animals.
