The Madhya Pradesh government officially notified the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve. While the move is significant for tiger conservation, it comes after a long wait, with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approving it 17 years ago. Here’s everything you need to know about this latest development:
Becomes MP's 8Th Tiger Reserve

Just 15 Kms Near Bhopal

Home to Over 70 Tigers

Ratapani is already home to an impressive population of tigers. According to the 2022 Tiger Census, there are 56 tigers in the reserve, with estimates suggesting that more than 70 tigers live in the area, based on indirect evidence like pugmarks. This makes the reserve a crucial habitat for tiger conservation in the region.

Ratapani Tiger Reserve is expected to garner international attention due to its proximity to Bhopal, which is close to an international airport. The reserve is also home to the Bhimbetka World Heritage Site, Amla Ghat on the Narmada River, and the Salkanpur Temple, all of which add to its cultural and ecological significance. This combination of natural beauty and wildlife will likely boost tourism and bring recognition to Bhopal on the global stage.

To prevent tiger movement into urban areas, a 10-foot-high fence is being installed along the reserve's 100-kilometer boundary near Bhopal. Additionally, a 10-foot-wide patrol road is under construction to enhance security and facilitate better monitoring of the area. These measures are designed to safeguard both the tigers and local communities.

The declaration of Ratapani as a Tiger Reserve is expected to bring significant benefits to the local economy. By boosting tourism and creating jobs, it will generate employment opportunities for local communities. Furthermore, financial assistance from the NTCA will aid in better management and conservation efforts, ensuring the reserve’s long-term success.

The Ratapani Tiger Reserve had been approved by the National Tiger Conservation Authority 17 years ago, but the official notification from the Madhya Pradesh government has only come recently. This move followed an earlier mix-up, when Madhav National Park was mistakenly announced as the eighth tiger reserve. Ratapani now officially takes its place as the 8th reserve in the state.
