X Down in India: Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) is facing a major outage, with hundreds of users reporting problems across the country. Many flagged the issue on Downdetector, noting that both the web version (x.com) and the Android/iOS apps are affected.
By 5:20 PM on Tuesday, Downdetector had recorded over 10,000 reports from users unable to access X. Most complaints came from the mobile app (61%), followed by the website (28%) and server connection issues (11%).
The disruption is widespread and appears to be impacting users globally, not just in India. On the other hand, the Cloudflare confirmed on Tuesday at 11:48 UTC that its global network is facing issues affecting multiple customers.
Many users on apps and websites such as X, Gemini, and Perplexity reported Cloudflare-related errors, and the company has confirmed it is experiencing a technical issue. OpenAI has confirmed on its website that ChatGPT and some other services are down, and the team is investigating the issue. However, the company has not said whether this problem is connected to the Cloudflare outage.
What is Cloudflare?
Cloudflare is one of the world’s largest network service providers, helping websites stay fast and secure by protecting them from cyberattacks. It works as a middle layer between a website and the users trying to access it. Meanwhile, many users are seeing a confusing error message: “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.”
This domain is normally used by Cloudflare to check whether a visitor is a real human and not a bot. It’s where Cloudflare’s verification tool, known as Turnstile, runs those “Are you human?” checks.
Earlier in May this year, the social media platform suffered an outage globally, including in India, as users were unable to load new posts and were unable to log in. According to Downdetector, thousands of users struggled to access X's webpages, as well as had issues with the app and login page.
While 41 per cent of users said they were unable to log in, the same number of users reported problems with the X app and 18 per cent with the website. The company had yet to reveal the reason behind the outage -- the second within 24 hours.
Several users in India tried to use the website but were unable to access it. According to Downdetector, more than 5,000 users worldwide reported issues with the microblogging platform. (With IANS Inputs)
